I've been treating folks with DID for about 20 years. Back when I first started there were very few resources for clients, and few for clinicians as well. I was not impressed with this book, as I had been hoping to find something for clients and their families that would be much more specific to the DID experience. This book includes a lot of general information about psychotherapy, schools of psychology, and therapeutic techniques like EMDR, as well as information about psychiatric medications. To me, this was all filler. I found only the last few chapters to be helpful. I could have used those chapters as a small booklet for clients and their families. Perhaps I had the wrong idea about what I was ordering. In any case, I won't be recommending this book to my DID clients.
This is an outstanding resource. I am a behavioral health worker and found it to be very informative and readable. It is very well written and easily understood. I've attempted to read other books on dissociation that were so complicated that the only point the author could've had for writing it was to show what a great vocabulary she has. It was not helpful and I never finished the book. I have a master's degree in social work and found Ms. Haddock's book to be, on the other hand, very enlightening.
Awesome. This isnt a DSM-V book, its clear and concise. There are clinical terms and explanations but they are quickly translated into laymens terms. Loaded with information to help you 'get' some of what DID persons do. Plenty of info on how trauma affects the brain, stages of therapy, medications, self-care- and the examples from real life patients was priceless. This book isnt fetishizing or romanticizing the disorder which I appreciate. It's not cartoonish nor does it look for way or people to 'blame'- its am excellent resource for not only DID, but has info on mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
A great in-depth look at DI D. I've read it practically cover to cover so far and it has been very very helpful in understanding and informing me of a diagnosis that I have recentlybeen blessed with so to speak. It makes me feel less alienated and less scared.it is very well written for someone like me who is just starting out in learning about the disorder or it is also good for someone who already knows stuff about it as well. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in the subject at all.
For those of us who are struggling to make sense of a complicated dissociative disorder, Haddock's book is a gift! She explains the concept of DID in a simple, straightforward manner, allowing you to comprehend the sometimes bewildering and frightening array of symptoms and reactions that affect your daily life. The concept of alters, so intrinsic to the DID diagnosis, is dealt with thoroughly. The book gives hand-on examples of how DID can appear in clinical settings, but more importantly , how it can manifest itself in the daily life of clients. She also gives a clear and concise descriptions and examples of various treatment approaches and phases. Most importantly, the book gives you faith that you need not suffer in silence....you are not going crazy and there is light at the end of the tunnel! A must for those with DDNOS / DID diagnosis.
This book has helped me so much. I understand my condition better now. The way the book is put together is wonderful. It covers all of the important things you need to know and understand. This should be given to everyone that has this disorder. So they won feel so alone and frightened of the unknown.
As a therapist working with adult survivors of child abuse, this has become a fabulous "go to" resource
This is an excellent book to read and own if you or a loved one has DPD.
