I was not aware of race riots that went on in Chicago before 1969 but then why would i? As a white young lady I was protected from even the rumors. I went to a Catholic girl's high school in Chicago. Out of 350 students, only 5 girls were black. A year after Martin Luther King was killed I was working at Sears headquarters at Homan and Arthington that is when I found out what it's like to be a white person in a sea of black people

An excellent read and good insight into the Chicago riots of 1919. It is wonderful that listening to your grandmother’s stories fueled the desire to write such an important book! Hopefully many schools will add this to the reserve section of books in their curriculum.

This is a compelling and informative book for teens and adult readers. What the author selected to present from her historical research, how she structured the story and excellent writing throughout make this an engaging and thought-provoking read.
It was an excellent historical overview of Chicago and the lives of the people who,lived there. Easy to read and interesting too.
